With the exception of wood( in which reloading stations are ever so slightly better) Gathering posts out class in nearly all aspects. You won't need too many more after that, but I highly suggest getting at least Steam Reloading Stations since you get so many more resources. You should use the starting 3 cores to build the Machine Shop and a couple Reloading Stations, use the ones from Crève-Neige and / or Storehouse to build an Infirmary and more Reloading Stations (you'll need the Infirmary for the accident that happens on Tower Pumps, unless you can keep the safety high, but in any case an Infirmary is invaluable), and the one from Site 107 to build a Foundry. That leaves 2 unused ones, and I suggest getting at least 2 from the Telegraph Post to fill out a couple Upgraded Docks. You'll need 2 for your production facilities, 1 for a Ventilation Plant, 1 for an Infirmary. If you're lucky you can pluck 2 Steam Cores from the Storehouse, but save before you try. If you're struggling on Steam Cores, you're guaranteed to get at least 3 from exploring (2 from Crève-Neige, 1 from Site 107), and 3 from the Steam Core Transport on the ground. They also take up no space compared to Gathering Posts, which is rather important when you have to cover that mess with Overseer or Security Stations, or have to use Braziers to keep everything warm.

Once you upgrade to Steam Reloading Stations, there no longer is a comparison - they're just so much efficient, both in manpower and resources gained, that to use Gathering Posts would be madness. Space becomes and issue, since with Advanced Docks you're going to have to cram 6(!) Gathering Posts in range of the 3 piles to match the efficiency of 3 Reloading Stations, which is somewhat difficult considering the locations of the inner two Dock facilities.
Gathering Posts gather the same amount of overall resources even if there are multiple piles in range, so you need to compensate with even more Gathering Posts. Twice as much wood using the same amount of men. A single Gathering Post will gather 7 Wood per hour, while the base Reloading Station gathers at 14 Wood per hour. Reloading Stations are vastly more useful.
